What Culebra snorkeling with sea turtles involves on this trip

The snorkeling is from the beach, not off a boat. Guides walk you in at Playa Tamarindo on Culebra's sheltered southwest coast, inside the Canal de Luis Peña Natural Reserve, and stay in the water with you for about two hours. Tamarindo is known for soft corals and sea anemones, and green and hawksbill turtles graze the seagrass beds just offshore, which is why sightings here are frequent rather than lucky.

Gear comes with the tour: mask, fins, snorkel and a flotation belt. The belt helps if you are an unsteady swimmer, though the listing asks that everyone be comfortable swimming, and the minimum age is 6. Count on 10 to 11 hours from the moment you meet the guide at Ceiba, so keep the evening clear.

The reserve has been a no-take area since 1999, the first in Puerto Rico: nothing comes out of the water, including shells, coral and fish. NOAA viewing guidance asks snorkelers to stay at least 50 yards from sea turtles and never to touch, ride or pet them. All of Culebra's seagrass beds are designated critical habitat, so standing on them or dragging fins through them is prohibited, and the lightest touch of a hand, foot or fin can damage coral.
