What Tamarindo Beach Culebra snorkeling looks like on this charter

The charter lasts 7.5 hours and takes up to 6 people. From $1292 is the price of the whole boat, so one booking covers the group; readers who want a per-person ticket should look at the ferry-based turtle and Flamenco day in the table lower down. Check-in is at 9:00am at the gazebo next to the Sunbay Marina office, and the run across to Culebra takes about an hour.

Tamarindo sits on Culebra's sheltered southwest coast, inside the Canal de Luis Peña Natural Reserve. The reserve was designated on 11 June 1999 after an 18-year local campaign, covers roughly 4.8 square kilometres (1,208 acres) and is the first no-take marine protected area in Puerto Rico: nothing may be removed, shells and coral included. The guided swim goes over soft corals and sea anemones, with green turtles feeding on the seagrass.

Rules in the water are specific and the crew will repeat them. NOAA viewing guidance asks snorkelers to stay at least 50 yards from a sea turtle and forbids touching, riding or petting one. All of Culebra's seagrass beds are designated critical habitat, so standing on them or dragging fins through them is prohibited, and any contact with coral does damage, down to the lightest brush of a hand or fin.

The second half of the day is spent at Honeymoon Beach on Cayo Luis Peña, the roughly 342-acre cay that forms part of the Culebra National Wildlife Refuge. The boat stops close to shore, the crew puts an umbrella on the sand and a floating mat in the water, and lunch is a BBQ of pork or chicken with pasta salad and sweet bread. There are no lifeguards at Tamarindo or on the cay, which is why the first snorkel of the day is the guided one. Bring a towel and sunblock; gear, food and drinks are already on board.

The day step by step

  1. Fajardo
Check-in starts at 9:00am at the gazebo, where the guides collect waiver signatures, explain how the day runs and go through the safety measures required by the USCG. Restrooms are available at this point. You then store your bags, board, and the boat sails for Culebra, about an hour away.
  2. Playa Tamarindo
At Tamarindo the crew sets up the gear and gives the snorkeling instructions, with time to get ready before you enter the water. The guide takes the group out to look for turtles, coral reef and the fish that live on it. Back on the boat there is fruit, snacks and drinks, then it is a short hop to Cayo Luis Peña.
  3. Culebra 240 min
The boat sits near the shore at Honeymoon Beach for the rest of the day, with the umbrella set up, the floating mat out and floats to use. A second snorkel here is unguided, in the spots the captain and guide point out. Lunch is prepared on board and you eat on the beach or on the boat. Between 3:00 and 3:30pm everyone is back aboard for the return, reaching the marina in Fajardo between 4:00 and 4:30pm.

Other ways to snorkel Tamarindo Beach in Culebra

Tamarindo beach Culebra snorkeling on the ferry-based day works on a different basis: 10 hours, from $146 per person. That price includes round-trip ferry tickets between Ceiba and Culebra with entry admission, gear, ground transport on the island, a guided interpretive snorkel with sea turtles and a visit to Flamenco Beach. Take it if you have no car on the mainland, or if you want the island itself as well as the water. Take the charter if you are four, five or six people who would rather have the boat, the umbrella and the BBQ to yourselves, with a 9:00am check-in at Sunbay Marina and no shared schedule to keep to.
