What Culebra snorkeling tours by boat involve
All four Culebra snorkeling tours on this page are day boats from the Fajardo side, listed at 6 hours, and the swimming happens from the boat at anchored stops rather than off a beach. The all-inclusive day runs 6 to 7 hours depending on ocean conditions and puts you in the water at two or three reefs, with turtles, sting rays and tropical fish as the usual sightings. On the catamarans the crossing takes about 90 minutes from Marina Puerto del Rey, past the Cordillera islands with El Yunque falling away behind you, and the rest of the day is spent at the beach.
Which beach you get is the captain's call on the day. Culebrita is the usual destination on the beach and fun catamaran, Flamenco or Culebrita on the Fajardo catamaran, and the decision comes down to water conditions. Lunch is on board on every option: a deli buffet on the power boat and the Fajardo catamaran, cold-cut sandwiches with fresh fruit, chips and dips on the all-inclusive day, and a choice of hamburger, chicken sandwich or veggie burger with salads and fresh fruit on the beach and fun trip.
Snorkel gear is included on three of the four. The beach and fun catamaran leaves snorkeling equipment out, and the operator states plainly that it is not a snorkeling tour; children under 6 and pregnant women are not allowed on it, and towels and sunscreen are on you. If reef time is the reason for the day, book one of the other three.
Which one fits you
Lowest starting price with the most reef stops: the Culebra Snorkeling and Beach Day Tour All Inclusive, from $168, two or three reefs, rum drinks and non-alcoholic drinks on board, meeting at 8:00am by the gray gazebo with the orange roof in front of the parking lot.
Staying near Fajardo with your own car: the catamaran from Puerto del Rey Marina, from $180, which has the longest review record here at 2,722 ratings. Check-in is 45 minutes before departure and there is parking at the marina close to where the boat leaves, which matters because hotel pickup is not included.
Best rating and the biggest spread of food and drink: the power boat with open bar, from $200, at 4.8 from 331 reviews. Its check-in is the strictest of the four, so build the arrival time into your morning.
A family day on the sand with kayaks, paddle boards and games: the beach and fun catamaran, from $195, with snacks, soda, alcoholic drinks and a burger or veggie burger each. Pack towels and sunscreen, and pick a different boat if anyone in the group came to snorkel.
